Today, the North–South divide in Europe represents one of the most critical challenges facing the European Union, significantly affecting the process of regional integration. This divide reflects several classical European rifts, including East–West, older–newer member states, continental-oriented versus Atlantic-oriented perspectives, and disparities between more and less developed countries. Within the framework of governance theory, this article addresses the following questions: Where did the North–South divide originate within the EU? What dimensions and levels does it encompass? And what role has the Eurozone economic crisis played in its deepening? The North–South divide is analyzed on three levels. At the national level, primary causes include structural weaknesses in Southern countries, political and economic corruption, governance disparities, unequal GDP levels, and internal religious and cultural differences. At the regional level, tensions between France and Germany, the Eurozone economic crisis, and austerity policies are major contributing factors. At the international level, globalization and the global financial crisis have contributed to further deepening the divide.
