The People’s Republic of China and the European Union have significant disagreements on issues such as the role of the state in the economy and human rights in China. Nevertheless, it should be acknowledged that in recent years, the two sides, owing to their dynamic and complementary economies—which account for the highest share of global foreign integration—have engaged in substantial strategic cooperation. Notably, this cooperation, primarily in the areas of trade and foreign direct investment, has significantly influenced the nature of relations between the United States and the European Union. Against this backdrop, the present study, adopting a descriptive-analytical approach and drawing on the theoretical assumptions of Liberal Institutionalism, seeks to answer the question: “How can the visible and hidden effects of expanding economic and trade relations between China and the European Union on US–EU relations be assessed?” The hypothesis posited is that, on the one hand, the emphasis on a rule-based multilateral system has fostered shared commitments among Chinese and European policymakers, and on the other hand, the election of President Trump, who emphasized protectionist strategies and withdrawal from trade agreements, has considerably cooled EU–US relations. The overall outcome of these developments suggests that strengthening China–EU relations has concurrently attenuated the intensity of EU–US ties.
