Regional integration, or the movement toward closer cooperation, represents a central theme in international discourse. However, scholarly research on integration in Central Asia remains limited, often confined to conversational or non-systematic treatments. This article seeks to provide a scientific understanding of integration processes in Central Asia and, more broadly, in Eurasia. The main research question is: “Can the evolving phenomena of integration be defined as genuine cohesion, and, in other words, can Central Asia be considered a real geopolitical region?” The hypothesis posits that integration initiatives among Central Asian countries have largely failed due to governance ambiguities and internal challenges, while integration proposals by extra-regional actors face an uncertain and ambiguous outlook. Furthermore, assessing the balance and interconnections among active regional mechanisms and organizations—such as the Eurasian Economic Union—and the Eurasian integration projects proposed by post-Soviet regional actors is critical. This study examines political ideas and projects concerning regional integration and their prospective trajectories.
