Accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) offers considerable benefits for Iran’s domestic economy and foreign trade. Accordingly, the Islamic Republic of Iran decided to pursue WTO membership in 1996 and has made efforts over the past three decades to achieve this goal. However, due to various internal challenges and external opposition, primarily from the United States, Iran has not yet succeeded in joining the organization. Domestically, there remain voices opposing WTO accession, arguing that at least in the short term, it may harm the country’s economic and trade interests. A further obstacle lies in the shortage of experienced and specialized diplomats. Although in the past decade, many individuals have received training from responsible institutions, there is still a lack of skilled and experienced economic and trade diplomats capable of negotiating effectively at the international level. This study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach to examine the measures undertaken by the Islamic Republic of Iran to meet the requirements of economic diplomacy in the process of WTO accession.
