Contemporary sports have undergone a substantial process of internationalization. The strategic, deliberate, and intentional utilization of sports by nations to foster interaction, exchange of information, and positive relations has been identified as a key aspect of sports diplomacy. This approach, characterized by the deliberate and purposeful application of sports as a tool for international engagement, has been shown to enhance international credibility, increase activism, and pursue foreign policy objectives. Sport has been identified as a tool in the realms of diplomacy and politics, with a positive role to play. The practice of sports diplomacy has emerged as a strategic instrument for governments, enabling them to enhance their standing and credibility. Therefore, it is essential to acknowledge that, in addition to military or political power, there are other, less costly ways in which countries can achieve their objectives. Qatar exemplifies a nation that, despite its unique geographical circumstances, employs this form of diplomatic engagement to attain its regional and international objectives. In this regard, the primary question guiding the forthcoming article is how sports diplomacy affects Qatar's international prestige. It is hypothesized that Qatar's successful hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup is attributable to the nation's strategic use of sports diplomacy, which has manifested through four distinct components: the consolidation of its position as a prominent regional actor, the leveraging of significant opportunities for public diplomacy, and the augmentation of its global influence. The application of soft power, active involvement in peace and security, and the cultivation of public opinion have been identified as critical factors that contribute to an enhancement in international prestige.
